Id like to let you know that I recently lost my annotated and very well-loved copy of Fragile Things in the San Diego Airport.
Rather, I lent it to a goth kid who'd been sitting next to me and wanted to know if I had an Android charger. I did. She plugged her phone in, and a pinhole light on the screen blinked into life. We both looked at the otherwise dead screen for a moment, and I asked her where she was flying to. New York, she said.
Then she asked me what book I was reading - Fragile Things, I told her, by the same guy who wrote Coraline. What's it *about*, though, she asked again.
Im at best a mediocre writer, so I rather gave her the book than trying to explain things myself. I figure some folks get Hugos for writing stories, and I should let 'em do it.
She didnt seem to mind my scribbles in the margins, and it was fun, watching a painted face that looked so somber and serious just a few minutes ago smile. A Study in Emerald had its surprising share of humour. After a while, I stopped paying attention and scrolled absentmindedly through my phone.
Then I hear my flight called - San Diego to Philadelphia, the boarding now, group C, C as in Coconut. I grab my bag, my phone, my ticket, pat my pockets down for my passport, my overstuffed backpack, precariously balanced on my carryon luggage, my headphone wires tangled in the strap of my purse and jerked out of my ears. I trot hastily over to the gate check - a smile, a beep, and I'm shuffled down the gangway and into the plane. My things stowed, and myself cozy against the window.
This was when I went to reach for my book, and realised that it was missing - still nestled comfortably in the hands of a 15-odd goth.
I miss my book. It had many memories in it, beyond the stories told there. My grandfather was still alive when i first read Fragile Things, and he was the one who gave it to me. But I hope that the kid who has it now will also love the stories you wrote. I hope maybe she will remember me and our little story, that we now share. Maybe she will also keep other memories of her own in there.
It seems an oddly fitting way for me to part with this book. It was an old fragile thing, given to me by a fragile man, and left to a child with whom i had only a fragile, tenuous connection.
Or maybe I'm reading too much into things, i don't know.
At any rate, if you read all this rambling, thank you mister Gaiman.
I hope it was the book she needed.

studying methods ˖ ⊹ ࣪ ౨ৎ˚
"the kpop method"
You're going to pretend that your school is a kpop company, and each class represents a different kpop group, and each student is a member of that group. The best student in each class is the most biased member, and the worst student is the least biased member. work until you are the most biased member. By working hard and putting in your effort, you can become the most biased member of your class and achieve your academic goals.
BONUS - If you want to become the best version of yourself while still using the kpop method, i have a little tip for you! You're going to make a list of requirements for yourself, this can include how you want to dress, how you want to act, make a routine for yourself, etc. Then you can pretend it's your "company" telling these things, as if you were a real kpop idol ˖ ᡣ𐭩 ⊹ ࣪

" The Rory Gilmore method"
this method is not very complex, but it has a lot of steps.
1. create a schedule - Rory is well-known for her strict schedule and commitment to sticking to it. To study like Rory, you should first make a timetable outlining your study time, your reading time, and free time. Include breaks in your schedule and try to follow it as much as you can.
2. lots of reading - Rory is an avid reader who always carries a book with her. Pick books that interest you and make reading a daily habit ( i recommend reading before bed because it helps me to calm down and helps me with falling asleep). Reading books will help you develop your vocabulary and critical thinking skills.
3. Take notes - Rory is well-known for her detailed notes and ability to retain new information. Take notes in class and annotate your books. Make your notes more structured by using highlithers and different colors, and review them daily. (goodnotes - ios, notion - ios and android are great for digital notes)
4. Make use of flashcards - Rory memorises stuff through flashcards. Flashcards can be used for vocabulary terms, key concepts, and other relevant information. Use them to test yourself and review regularly.
5. Define your goals - Rory has a set goal, what are you working for? Make a vision board, write down your goals, visualize. This will help you stay motivated and not loose focus!
6. stay organized - Rory is well-organized, and her study space is always neat and tidy. Keep your study area nice and free from distractions. Use folders, binders, and other tools to keep your notes and supplies organized, make sure your work space is clean and clutter-free.
7. seek help when needed - Rory is not afraid to ask for help when she needs it. Don't hesitate to ask for help from your teachers, tutors, or classmates if you need it. To enhance your learning, ask questions, and seek out extra resources such as textbooks, youtube videos, and study guides.
8. atmosphere - Don't forget to make the atmosphere cozy, light a candle, prepare yourself a cup of tea or coffee, and wear a comfy sweater. Create an environment in which you can stay focused for hours! ˖ ᡣ𐭩 ⊹ ࣪

an app you frequently use besides this godforsaken site and who is/are your comfort character(s)? ☺️☺️
an app you frequently use besides this godforsaken site
First of all I don't have the tumblr app, I only access it from Firefox! Which is my first answer. Firefox my beloved. I mostly have screen shortcuts to my favourite sites rather than apps. Also, various communications apps.
Other favourite apps are:
Stellarium, an astronomy app that identifies objects in the sky. I love the linux desktop version even more because it has more functionality than the android app, such as "tell me what the sky around Christmas in the 1970s in Sierra Leone looked like", which I actually used for one single line in a fanfic. Or star charts from other cultures, because not everybody used to have the Greek/Western ones!
TopoGPS, a map app with pretty good map material (one-off purchase for detailed maps up to I think 1:10.000, but it also has an Open Street Maps integration), and the ability to search for coordinates in basically every format you can get them (or convert coordinates from one format to another). Also a pretty good routing function, not like google maps in that it tells you where to turn, but you can create a route and it tells you how long & steep it is, the difference in altitude, etc. And you can mark and annotate points, which has been useful for many a hike or surprise discovery of interesting places.
who is/are your comfort character(s)
Captain Flint from Black Sails. My blorbo. Comfort character when I want to feel/fuel queer rage.
The specific version of Ginny Weasley in the Fanfic "The Changeling" and the following "Armistice" series, in which she is in Slytherin. Comfort character for when I need to see very hard things through, comfort character for standing your ground and being an immovable object. For finding your place in the world. For healing after trauma.
Frodo Baggins. I was thinking Aragorn first, but Aragorn is inspirational, and Frodo is for comfort. For suffering and endurance and the strength of relying on others when you can't see the hard thing through on your own. For not healing after trauma, and that being okay too.
Thank you for asking!! :)

Anime and Music: The Iconic Usage of Sound in Japanese Animation
Ever heard a song while watching an anime episode and been like “hey, I know that song”? We have too. We’re all aware of (or at least should be) Duvet by Bôa being featured in Serial Experiments Lain and the legendary drum fills and bass lines associated with Cowboy Bebop’s intro (Tank! by Seatbelts), but we thought we’d introduce a few more niche picks from some of our favorite shows at Cooledtured. From Radiohead to Duran Duran, it’s no surprise that some of our favorite animes have been host to some of our favorite music picks as well.
Ergo Proxy (2005): Paranoid Android by Radiohead
A Japanese sci-fi rendition of events that focus on Earth post-ecological apocalyptic disaster in the second half of the 21st century, humanity is reduced to just under 20% of its prior population size and is pitted against Cogito virus-infected newly conscious androids, whom they cohabitate cities with. The “Proxy” in question is a humanoid (read: robotic) species who is deployed in response to a series of murders that the androids are suspected to be tied to.
It’s reported that Radiohead initially declined when asked for permission from the Ergo Proxy studio to use their work, though they changed their mind after they reviewed the script. We’re pretty glad they did because in our opinion, Paranoid Android is very reflective of the anime in more ways than one. Both media are bleak, gritty, and artistically very in-tune with each other - we wouldn’t want it any other way.
youtube
What's that? (I may be paranoid, but no android)
FLCL (2005): Soundtrack by The Pillows
FLCL is a hugely musically-inspired anime - from the names of the installments being christened after music genres such as Alternative, Grunge, Shoegaze, etc., we can be at least partially aware of at least a few of the bands that inspired the writers. After the main character Naota is run over (yes) by Haruko, he’s then hit in the head (yes) by Haruko. Her weapon of choice? A Rickenbacker 4001 bass guitar. Somehow this causes a portal to be opened by which giant robots can materialize from. It gets weirder but we’ll skip that for now because you should honestly just watch the series.
Anyways, Japanese band The Pillows wrote and performed the entire 6-part soundtrack for the show - five insert songs and one closing theme - including two entirely new songs, "Ride on Shooting Star" and "I Think I Can”. The popularity of FLCL in the Western hemisphere allowed The Pillows, a band we can confidently say was pretty much unknown by then, to go on tour in the United States. Pretty cool.
youtube
“I found out about your irreplaceable dream - now I can't fool anyone anymore. Sleeping or waking, I'm repeating 'I can'.”
Speed Grapher (2005): Girls on Film by Duran Duran
Former war photographer Tatsumi Saiga performs an investigation on the underground taboo club known as the Roppongi Club when the mysterious captive mistreated goddess Kagura spares him, while also giving him the ability to destroy anything he photographs. In an attempt to gain favors from Kagura, club members often vy for her attention and attempt to become as “worthy” as possible to also gain powers from her. However, when Saiga attempts to free Kagura from captivity, members who were granted powers by Kagura are deadset on stopping this from occurring by any means possible.
Again, similarly to how Ergo Proxy employs the Radiohead song Paranoid Android in its credits, we like how Speed Grapher chose a song that is lyrically quite related to the context of the show. The Genius annotation states that the Duran Duran song’s lyrics are meant to portray the exploitation of models in fashion and adult industries, which is a good fit for the character Kagura.
youtube
“There's a camera rolling on her back, and I sense a rhythm humming in a frenzy - all the way down her spine”
Conclusion
In conclusion, anime has long been a powerful medium not just for storytelling and visual innovation, but also for its bold and evocative use of music. From globally recognized hits to hidden gems, the synergy between sound and scene in Japanese animation often elevates a show from memorable to iconic.
Whether it’s Radiohead’s haunting introspection in Ergo Proxy, The Pillows’ chaotic energy in FLCL, or Duran Duran’s provocative glamour in Speed Grapher, these musical moments do more than just complement their respective series—they become an inseparable part of their identity. So next time you watch an anime, listen closely. You might just discover your new favorite song wrapped in a scene you’ll never forget.

🌿Study with me! 29.01.25🌿
📖 Subject: Academic Planning, French Writing
⏳️ Time: 45 minutes
📍Location: Bush House, London
Here's me getting my act together and doing the damn thing! First off downloading all the pdfs I need for my Writing Fiction course, then the ones I need to read this week for Understanding Modern France, and organising them all. If anyone else has an android tablet I highly highly recommend Flexcil for annotating PDFs! (and canva for converting things into pdfs for free because I'm not paying for Adobe)
Then I'm writing out my answer to "Expliquer «La société de l’entre-soi»" for my French Writing seminar tomorrow. We are reading and examining Maurin's «Le Ghetto Français» for this class this semester. Later I have a q&a session for any last minute year abroad questions before the submission deadline on Sunday. Exciting!

Note Taking for "Gifted Kids" Who Were Never taught How
Based on the conversation in this post:
Here are some tools for taking notes that will help even if you've never been taught a good system.
Note Taking Smart Pens
One of the things that was hardest for me when I first started taking notes was figuring out what to write down/capture so I would be able to find it again and understand it. When I was a journalist I got to review several iterations of the Livescribe pen and wished every day that I'd had one in college.
Pens of this type will not only turn your written notes into a digital file (and may even be able to translate your handwriting into typed text), the best ones will also record audio while you write. To play back the audio, you use the pen to tap on an area of the page where you were writing, and the audio will play back from that point. So not only do you have your notes, but also the words of the instructor.
Here's a roundup of the current pens of this type.
Grab the Livescribe here:
Note Taking with Mobile Devices
There are also apps for iOS and Android that will do similar things to the Smart Pen or you can use them to record, auto-transcribe, and bookmark specific parts of a lecture as it's recording.
You can find a listing of these apps and other note taking devices here and here.
Did a quick search and found these apps for iOS and Android (respectively):
Using these you won't have to take the best notes or even have a super good system in order for you to capture what you need and find it again for studying.

Sonic X: Gotta Go Fast Again - Chapter 26: The Ultimate Imitation

Sonic X: Gotta Go Fast again is a thrilling continuation of the beloved anime, promising action-packed escapades and heartwarming moments as our heroes embark on their next chapter! Available for Reading on AO3 & FF!
FanFiction:
Archive of Our Own:
Preview:
Rouge found herself once again in the familiar confines of Eggman's base, a place she had infiltrated countless times before. The air vents had become her secret passageways, their narrow confines offering a vantage point that was both concealed and strategic.
Peering through the slats, Rouge's eyes were drawn to the control room below. It was a cavernous space, dominated by a sprawling array of monitors and blinking lights that cast an eerie glow across the room. Eggman stood at the center. Rouge couldn't help but smirk at the sight; despite his genius, Eggman had yet to secure these vents against her intrusions.
"My, my. What are you up to, Doctor?" Rouge mused quietly to herself.
For a time, nothing seemed out of the ordinary. Eggman busied himself with his usual tasks, his fingers dancing over keyboards as lines of code scrolled across the monitors. Rouge watched patiently, her senses attuned to any sign of intrigue or danger. The minutes ticked by, each one stretching into eternity as she lay in wait.
Then, something caught her eye—a file name on one of Eggman's massive screens: Project Shadow. Her heart skipped a beat, and she leaned forward slightly, straining to get a better look. The name was all too familiar, conjuring memories of past encounters and unanswered questions.
Rouge's mind raced with possibilities. Could this be related to her recent encounter with that Shadow android? The thought sent a shiver down her spine, igniting a spark of curiosity and determination within her. She knew she had to uncover whatever secrets Eggman was hiding about Project Shadow.
As the lights dimmed and the base settled into an artificial night, Rouge waited patiently, her senses heightened in the quiet darkness. The rhythmic ticking of machinery and the distant hum of generators provided a mechanical lullaby as Eggman retired to his quarters, leaving the control room unguarded. Once she was certain he was gone, Rouge moved with the silent grace of a shadow, slipping from her hiding place in the air vents. Her descent was a fluid motion, her wings barely rustling as she landed softly on the floor, her heeled boots making no sound against the cold metal beneath her.
Rouge approached the central computer, its screen casting a pale glow that accentuated her silhouette against the darkness. She leaned forward, her hips arching slightly as she began to type with nimble fingers. The password was unchanged—Maria—a name that lingered like a ghost in Eggman's world.
Rouge's eyes flickered over the contents of the file that unfolded before her. It was familiar yet different, like a book revisited after many years. The core details remained intact, but new annotations in Eggman's distinctive scrawl caught her attention.
"Is Eggman trying to make his own Shadow?" she mused aloud, her voice a soft murmur in the stillness. The thought was both intriguing and unsettling, weaving threads of suspicion through her mind as she continued to delve deeper into the data.

through adventure / we are not adventuresome*
I will be traveling halfway around the world for a couple of weeks** likely without a lot of time on the internet.*** Looking forward to writing**** while I am away and catching up on everything when I get back!!
*from here, which I recently remembered and adore
**I am asking the universe again to bolster my patience because it is entirely likely that this whole thing could devolve into a shit show
***maybe this will allow me to get some actual sleep for a change
****gapers delay, the last two countdown to season 3 soul meets body things that are lingering, and Richie/Kaitlyn are on the agenda. Plus something post-season 3 is brewing, along with stuff related to two original projects. This list is long.*****
*****As is the list of books I have packed to read******, which include:
Unreasonable Hospitality
Vibrant Collaboration
The Before the Coffee Gets Cold series
Three or four books recommended by @anxietycroissant
Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?
A Midsummer Night's Tale (as annotated by me during my college Shakespeare class a billion years ago, which should be fun to revisit 🤣)
******Note that there is a real possibility I will come back having read NOTHING.
